The internet is full of advice about local SEO. Most of it is written for marketing agencies, not for the person who runs a four-person HVAC crew. Here's what actually matters.
The Google Map Pack is the prize
When someone searches for a local service on Google, the first thing they see (after ads) is the map pack — three business listings with a map. These get more clicks than everything below them combined.
Getting into the map pack requires a strong Google Business Profile. That means a complete profile with accurate info, photos of your work, your service categories set correctly, your service area defined, and — most importantly — Google reviews.

A citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number on another website. Yelp, BBB, Angi, Houzz, and local chamber of commerce directories are all citations.
Citations help because Google uses them to confirm your business is real and where you say it is. The key is consistency — your NAP (name, address, phone) must match exactly across every listing.
You don't need to be on hundreds of directories. Claiming your listing on the top 10–15 (Google, Yelp, BBB, Facebook, Bing, Apple Maps, Angi, and a few local ones) makes a meaningful difference.
