How to Choose the Right Domain Name for Your Service Business

Your domain name is your business's permanent address on the internet. Here's how to choose one you won't regret — and avoid the mistakes most people make.

Most service business owners overthink this decision. Your domain name matters — but not in the way people assume. It doesn't need to be clever. It doesn't need to contain keywords. It needs to be easy to remember, easy to spell, and professional.

Here's a practical framework for choosing one.

Start with your business name

The simplest domain is just your business name. SmithPlumbing.com. AccurateLandscaping.com. BrightCleaningServices.com. If your business name is available as a .com, that's almost always the best choice.

Stick with .com if at all possible. Customers default to .com and may end up on the wrong site if you use .net or .biz.

What if my business name is taken?

  • Add your city: SmithPlumbingDenver.com or SmithPlumbingCO.com adds local context and is usually available.
  • Add your trade: If your name is too common, add what you do: JohnsonElectrical.com or JohnsonElectricians.com.
  • Try slight variations: GetSmithPlumbing.com or CallSmithPlumbing.com work fine and are often available.
  • Consider a descriptive name: DenverFastPlumber.com or BoiseCleaningPro.com — less personal but clear and available.

What to avoid

  • Hyphens: Smith-Plumbing.com looks unprofessional and is hard to dictate over the phone. 'Is that with a hyphen?' is a question you don't want to answer.
  • Numbers: 1stChoicePlumbing.com or Number1Landscaping.com are hard to spell and look dated.
  • Long names: Under 15 characters is ideal. Anything over 20 is hard to remember and easy to mistype.
  • Trendy spellings: Kreative Kleen or Xpert Handymen might seem distinctive but look unprofessional in an email address.

Where to register it

Namecheap, Google Domains (now Squarespace Domains), and Cloudflare Registrar are reliable and fairly priced — typically $10–$15/year for a .com. GoDaddy is popular but tends to upsell aggressively.

Whoever registers it should be you, or someone who you fully control. Your domain name is a business asset. Don't let a web designer or agency register it in their name.
